This book aims to publicize the importance of stromatolites and of Bacalar Lagoon,
which is located on the Mexican Caribbean coast.
The stromatolites, which some call living rocks, are very important, since thanks to
them life with oxygen originated and they contributed to creating the ozone layer of
Earth. They exist in very few places. In Bacalar are found the largest, forming the longest
reef of stromatolites in freshwater in the world.
Unfortunately, various threats exist to their survival and to the beauty and biodiversity
of Bacalar Lagoon. In addition, the existence and biodiversity of life on the planet are
seriously threatened by our way of life, which is affecting them in an alarming way. If
we don’t make significant changes, we could be at the threshold of great disasters and
our own extinction.
A very interesting book that combines the story of Avishta’s life with relevant
environmental themes such as the preservation of the stromatolites.
The story of Lito reflects the passion and affection of the author for Bacalar
Lagoon, as well as offering scientific data about the microbialites.

Avishta O’Kelard show us a dialogue with Don Lito, a stromatolite of Bacalar.
Thanks to this dialogue, the stromatolites cease to be strange beings and
remind us that they have been part of the history of our planet since its origin.
Bacalar shelters the largest reef of modern stromatolites in freshwater
in the world. It is up to us to ensure that they remain on the planet. Avishta
shows us a scenario in which humans, stromatolites and Bacalar Lagoon
manage to live and survive together.

This is a marvelous book that invites us to take a trip to the beginning of life
in Bacalar Lagoon, letting us learn more about stromatolites in an entertaining
and simple form, and a little more of the history of the people who have
been important in the protection of this ecosystem.
